Nicola Relph

Sports Biomechanist

Nicola Relph is a Sports Biomechanist conducting research on the biomechanics of the knee joint in ACL-reconstructed knees!  Following a degree and masters degree at Sheffield Hallam Univeristy, Nicola joined the teaching staff at the University of Cumbria in 2006.

Having presented her MSc research findings at the British Association for Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) Conference, Nicola began a part-time PhD at Salford Univeristy in 2008.  Her thesis focuses on investigating themes related to the role of movement variability in injury prevention, anterior cruciate ligament injuries and the role of balance equipment on injury prevention.

Nicola's hockey experience includes playing at school for 5 years and a couple of (unsuccessful!) county trials. Prefering football to hockey, Nicola is a cup winner with Morecambe Ladies F.C. and, to prove that she is not just a glory-hunter, supports her hometown football club, Swindon Town, who don't actually win anything.

"An understanding of biomechanics can have a massive impact on the acquisition and effective performance of technical skills"
